In females, baldness is not as much common as in men. The psychological problem of hair loss is much greater in female. The hair present at the front portion of the head is not lost but the hair density on all areas of the head is decreased. The men who lose hair have less testosterone. But most of the women who lose hair have their testosterone levels normal. This testosterone also helps in determining the secondary sexual characters in both men and women. It is estimated that hair loss affects 31 million women in the United States of America. In women hair loss occurs after the age of 50 years or so. But recent reports showcases that hair loss is becoming more and more common in girls at a tender age of 15 or 16.
The female pattern is not following a particular trend but it goes around the whole top of the scalp and can affect women at any time. There are also other reasons for hair fall in women such as pregnancy, menopause ovarian cysts; birth control tabs with a high androgen index, polycystic ovary syndrome cause this disease. Thyroid disorders play a large role in hair loss. Anemia and chronic illness also causes a lot of hair loss. Certain types of medications and drugs cause loss of hair up to a very large extent. Hair loss can be caused due to the chemotherapy treatment which is done to cure cancer.
